Does my Power8 server stop working on its end-of-support date?

No. The hardware continues to function exactly as it did the day before. What ends is IBM's commitment to hardware maintenance, machine code updates, and security patches for that model.

Is end of support the same for every Power8 model?

No. Each model has its own individual end-of-support date, ranging from the E850's October 2023 date to the S812's July 2025 date.

What IBM Power8 End of Support Actually Means

Power8 end of support does not shut down the server. It ends IBM's standard hardware commitment for that model. The machine can keep running, but parts, firmware, operating-system support, and recovery now need separate decisions instead of one blanket support assumption.

What does not stop

The physical hardware keeps running. IBM i, AIX, or Linux continues to boot and operate exactly as configured. Existing PowerVM partitions, storage, and network configuration are unaffected on the day support ends. This is why many organizations continue running Power8 in production well past its EOS date ... the risk is cumulative and probabilistic (an eventual hardware failure with no IBM parts commitment, an unpatched firmware vulnerability), not immediate.

Hardware EOS is not IBM i Service Extension

Every Power8 model is past standard IBM hardware support. IBM i 7.4 is a separate software product with its own clock. Its standard support ended September 30, 2026, and paid Service Extension is available through September 30, 2029. That extension does not cover Power8 hardware and does not make IBM i 7.5 or 7.6 run on Power8.

The two real risks that accumulate

Hardware failure without parts

If a component fails and IBM will not supply a replacement part, you are dependent on the used-parts and third-party maintenance market to keep the system running.

Unpatched firmware vulnerabilities

Any security issue discovered in Power8 firmware after a model's EOS date will not be patched by IBM on that model, indefinitely.

Neither risk is hypothetical, and neither is usually catastrophic on day one. That is exactly what makes Power8 EOS easy to ignore ... and exactly why it is worth a deliberate maintain-or-migrate decision instead of an accidental one.
