Power8 Migration Paths
Four real paths off IBM Power8: migrate to Power9, Power10, Power11, or move to IBM Power Virtual Server ... and how to choose without rewriting your applications.
There is no direct upgrade path from Power8 ... every route forward is a hardware refresh or a move to IBM's cloud. That is actually good news for planning: because IBM Power maintains strong binary compatibility across generations, an IBM i, AIX, or Linux workload built for Power8 runs on Power9, Power10, or Power11 without a rewrite. The decision is about which generation and which delivery model, not whether your applications will survive the move.
The four paths
Power8 → Power9
The smallest hardware jump and often the lowest-cost refresh, especially on the used/refurbished market. Ceiling: IBM i 7.5 ... does not reach the current IBM i 7.6 release.
Power8 → Power10
Skips a generation, lands on hardware that supports IBM i 7.6 (the current release), and remains fully sold and supported by IBM alongside Power11.
Power8 → Power11
IBM's current shipping generation. Highest headroom and longest runway before the next end-of-support cycle, typically at a higher entry cost than Power10.
Power8 → Power Virtual Server
Move the workload into IBM's cloud instead of buying new hardware at all. Trades capex for opex and removes hardware lifecycle planning entirely.

Used vs. new hardware economics
Power9 hardware is now itself several years past new-sale pricing and is available in volume on the used and refurbished market, often at a meaningfully lower entry cost than new Power10 or Power11 systems. The tradeoff is support horizon: a used Power9 system still caps out at IBM i 7.5 and will eventually face its own end-of-support clock, while new Power10 or Power11 hardware buys the longest runway before the next forced decision. Weigh the used-hardware discount against how many years of runway you actually need before deciding.
Migrating without rewriting applications
For IBM i and AIX shops specifically, the practical migration work is rarely about the application code itself ... it is about the surrounding infrastructure: HMC version compatibility, PowerVM/VIOS levels, storage and PCIe adapter compatibility, IBM i software tier re-pricing under the new processor feature code, and partition (LPAR) re-creation on the new console. Plan for that infrastructure work explicitly rather than assuming a hardware swap alone completes the migration.
