About Power 8 AS/400 Systems
A structured, machine-readable IBM Power8 end-of-support and migration decision reference for AS/400 and IBM i hardware operators.
Power 8 AS/400 Systems is a Power8-specific deep dive built as part of the AS400System.com family of IBM i and AS/400 hardware research sites. Where our Power9, Power10, and Power11 sibling sites cover current and near-current hardware, this site exists for a different reason: IBM Power8 has already passed its own end-of-support window, and every operator still running it is at a real decision point. This site organizes that decision, model by model.
Our approach
Every end-of-support date, IBM i compatibility claim, and migration mapping on this site traces to a cited source: IBM's own end-of-service documentation, IBM's IBM i support lifecycle announcements, IBM Redbooks, or published third-party maintenance and reseller data where noted. Where a figure is not independently confirmed ... such as exact core-count-per-node on the largest enterprise models ... we say so plainly and point you to IBM's own configurator rather than estimating a number we cannot back up.
Why this site exists
IBM Power8 was withdrawn from marketing between 2017 and 2020, and every current model has passed its own IBM end-of-support date, from the E850's October 2023 date through the S812's July 2025 date. IBM i 7.4, the only IBM i release Power8 hardware can still run, loses standard IBM support on September 30, 2026. None of that means Power8 hardware stops working ... but it does mean every operator still running it should make an active, informed choice: extend support through a third-party maintenance provider, or migrate to current hardware. This site is built to make that choice easier, not to sell you a specific outcome.
