Power8 to IBM Power Virtual Server

IBM Power Virtual Server (Power Virtual Server, sometimes shortened to PowerVS) lets you run IBM i, AIX, or Linux workloads on IBM Power infrastructure hosted in IBM Cloud, without owning or maintaining physical hardware. For a Power8 operator whose real goal is getting off unsupported, aging hardware ... not necessarily owning newer hardware ... it is worth evaluating alongside a physical Power10 or Power11 refresh.

Because Power Virtual Server runs on real IBM Power infrastructure rather than an emulated environment, the same binary compatibility that lets an application move from Power8 to Power10 hardware unmodified generally applies when moving into Power Virtual Server. IBM i, AIX, and Linux workloads run largely as-is, with network, storage, and connectivity reconfigured for a cloud-hosted environment rather than rewritten application code.

Moving to Power Virtual Server now can buy planning time for a longer-term architecture decision without extending life on unsupported hardware.
Power Virtual Server is not automatically cheaper than owning hardware over a multi-year horizon ... model the total cost against a Power10 or Power11 purchase, including the TPM and depreciation costs you would otherwise carry, before deciding.
