The IBM i 7.4 Ceiling: What It Means for Power8
Most Power8 end-of-support conversations focus on hardware dates. The more urgent constraint is the software ceiling above it: IBM i 7.5 dropped Power8 hardware support entirely, which makes IBM i 7.4 the permanent, un-upgradable ceiling for any Power8 system ... and IBM i 7.4 itself is scheduled to leave standard IBM support on September 30, 2026.
Why 7.5 does not install on Power8
IBM ties each IBM i release to a minimum supported hardware generation. IBM i 7.5 raised that floor to Power9, cutting Power8 out of the upgrade path entirely. This was a deliberate platform decision by IBM, not a bug or an oversight ... it reflects IBM narrowing ongoing OS engineering investment to newer hardware generations.
The September 30, 2026 deadline

IBM i 7.6 notably excludes Power9 as well as Power8 ... it requires Power10 or Power11 specifically.
This is the fact that should drive your Power8 timeline more than any individual hardware EOS date: after September 2026, there is no supported IBM i release available on Power8 hardware, period.
What this means for migration planning
If you are planning a migration off Power8 and want to land on hardware that supports the current IBM i 7.6 release without a second refresh a few years from now, Power9 is not sufficient ... it caps out at IBM i 7.5.
