The Power E870 (9119-MME) was IBM's modular enterprise Power8 system: a multi-node architecture built from 12-core POWER8 processor modules, scaling memory up to 16 TB across a fully configured multi-node system. It was positioned for large-scale IBM i, AIX, and Linux consolidation where the E850's single-enclosure ceiling was not enough.

Best fit

A modular, multi-node enterprise Power8 platform for large-scale IBM i, AIX, and Linux consolidation. If you have one, it was almost certainly bought for a mission-critical workload ... which makes its 2024 end-of-support date higher-stakes than for a smaller model.

IBM no longer sells the E870 new. As a large enterprise consolidation platform, sourcing continued third-party maintenance or planning a migration is a materially bigger project than for an entry or scale-out model ... budget lead time accordingly.
