IBM Power S822L (8247-22L)
The S822L (8247-22L) is the two-socket Linux-only Power8 server. It does not run IBM i. IBM standard support ended March 31, 2024.
The Power S822L (8247-22L) is the two-socket Linux-only Power8 machine. Same physical 2U footprint as the 8284-22A S822, same processor generation, entirely different licensing and support conversation, because the 8247 machine types never supported IBM i.
Where the S822L stands in 2026
IBM ended standard support on March 31, 2024. The practical consequence for a Linux shop is different than for an IBM i shop: there is no operating-system ceiling forcing the decision, so an 8247-22L can keep running Linux indefinitely as long as you are comfortable owning the hardware risk and can still source parts.
Machine type check: the 8247 prefix means Linux only. If you need IBM i on Power8 hardware, you are looking at an 8284 or 8286 scale-out machine or an enterprise 8408, 9119, or 9080 system instead.
